BARKAN RESERVE PINOTAGE 2007 - Created by the fortunate cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, in early 20th century, Pinotage has become the namesake of the South African wine industry. Thanks to the foresight of the Barkanwine making team, Barkan has become one of the only producers of Pinotage outside of South Africa. Bakan first planted Pinotage vineyards in the late 1990’s and it is probably one of the best value wines in the Israeli wine industry and it is one of my favorite wines made in Israel! Aged 12 months in used American Oak barrels, this wine has the opulence of a classic Pinotage, with notes of casis, five spice, and mocha. This wine is drinking very well right now, but can be aged for an additional 3-5 years.
CABRNET SAUVIGNON - SHIRAZ APPELLATION 2009 -The Appellation Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is an excellent wine for the quality and price point! It is such a versatile wine that it really goes well with lunch, appetizers, a pasta dish, meat dish, sushi, on a warm Summer day and on a chilly Winter evening. This wine is comprised of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Shiraz. The grapes are from the Upper Galilee, which is a premium terrior in Israel for grape growing. The wine was oaked for 12 months in old and new French barrelsGALIL MOUNTAIN YIRON 2009 - The 2009 is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdo. It is deep red in color and displays strong aromas of blackberry, cassis on a background of vanilla and toasted oak. It was oaked for 16 months in French barrels. The grapes were handpicked and harvested in the early morning. The grapes are from the vineyards in the Upper Galilee with the rich terra rosa, limestone and volcanic soil. The Yiron has won many national and international awards.
BARKAN ASSEMBLAGE REICHAN 2010 - Created from a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 13% Syrah, Barkan's Assemblage offers a great example of an old world style Ermitage wine. Sourced from great vineyards in one of the best Terroirs in Israel, Barkan has embraced its mediterranean roots and created one their best wines to date. Aged for 10 months the Raichan is a luscious yet powerful wine with hints of dark cassis and mediterranean herbs
CARIGNAN APPELLATION 2007 - The Carignan grapes came from the Zichron Yaakov area from a family that has been growing grapes since the time of Rothschild. This wine was blended with 10% Petit Verdo as well. This wine was oaked for 12 months in French barrels and the wine is dark garnet in color and has aromas of cherries, raspberries and freshly ground coffee. You can also detect some black current and vanilla on the long finish. This wine is full bodied and has balanced tannins. Carignan is known for its immense depth, flavor and rich round mouth-feel with balanced fruit and acidity.
CHARDONNAY APPELLATION 2009 - This Chardonnay was made from grapes in the Upper Galilee vineyards, which are known in Israel as some of the best vineyards in the country. The wine was fermented and aged in the oak barrel for 6 months. The color of the wine is a light golden, straw that is medium bodied and has a nice floral aroma.
TISHBI GEWURZTRAMINER 2011 - The Gewurztraminer is a new wine for Tishbi Winery. They started producing the Gewurz in 2009 and it was an instant success. This wine has a hint of sweetness to it although it is technically a dry wine. The grapes are from the Jerusalem Hills and are grown in chalky limestone soil 1000 meters above sea level. This wine is crisp and the acid is well balanced. The color is a beautiful light gold. On the nose, this wine is very flowery but to the palate there are hints of leeches, hyssop and apples.
